Two years ago, on the blog that preceeded The D-Ring, I announced that I was leaving the Pentagon to join a top-notch group of digital strategists at Edelman.
Today, I’m writing for two reasons.
First, I have left my job at Edelman for a media relations position at BAE Systems. It was a very difficult decision to leave a company I loved so much, but it was the right one for me at this time. I’m sad to leave behind some of the most creative, talented and good people I’ve ever worked with.
Second, I’m going to be suspending my writing at the D-Ring Blog. (Not that I’ve been writing much here lately anyhow.) I want to settle into my new job and from there, I will decide whether or not I can continue to write about the military and new media as a member of the defense community, rather than a public relations outsider who is looking in.
I’ve gotten to know some great people across the country and around the world through this blog, and I’ll certainly stay in touch. Milbloggers are doing a great thing not only for the field of communications, but for the men and women who are serving our country. You can’t keep me too far away from such good.
See you round the blogosphere,
Steve
Good to see you’ll have the opportunity to pursue your military passion further Steve – I wish you all the best with your move to the client side mate.
Steve, now that you’re at BAE, let me ask if you can keep banging your new media drum from within the ranks. There are organizations like AFCEA that need Web 2.0 “evangelists” out there in the trenches!
The Thunder Run has linked to this post in the – Web Reconnaissance for 09/05/2008 A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention, updated throughout the day…so check back often.
best of luck to you & hope to see you posting here again soon!
NOOO! Who will pick up after you? I hope you enjoy your new job Steve. Thanks for the tips and pointers.
Congratulations and all the best at your new position. I can’t imagine you’ll be away from blogging for long.
Congrats Steve – BAE is lucky to have someone like you working there. You should have told me that you were looking though – would have been interested in seeing you here at the B contractor too!
You will be missed Steve. But congratulations and good luck!
I’ll join the well-wishers, but I would suggest that it is possible to blog and keep one’s job in the defense business. Unless you’re a top executive, odds are that neither BAE or your clients will care (as long as you don’t talk about them). I hope you’ll reconsider and chime in with more posts in the future.
Thanks for the well, wishes all.
A few things:
Steve R., I wasn’t looking for a job, really. I loved working at Edelman. I got passed the announcement by my old Pentagon boss (now my new current boss), decided to see what was there and found it to be an opportunity I wanted to take.
Jason, continuing to blog is definitely a possiblity in the cards. I wanted to at least give it some time to settle in, get acquainted with the BAE Systems culture, and then take it from there.
Either way, It’ll be hard to keep me completely out of the blogosphere.
